Kitchen Island - Oak
One of the joys of furniture making is to be a part of the journey from first idea to realisation. Timber selection is a vital part of the process and what we find at the timber yard or sawmill can heavily influence our design ideas.
For Lesley and Norman, the brief was for a robust, rustic-looking kitchen island that would blend into a period setting – a 14th-century cruck-built house. We took inspiration from some English oak we found at our favourite Sussex sawmill. A full-width, single slab for the worktop offered an attractive grain and a practical work surface. This set the tone; substantial legs, generous no-nonsense drawers which open from either side, a slatted base and raised panels at the ends completed the design.
“Our kitchen island was the finishing touch and a chance to introduce something of ourselves into a long conservation project. It was important to us that it fitted in well to the space and was not fussy or over-finished. Max approached the task sympathetically and imaginatively and we couldn’t be more delighted with the outcome. The design functions well, it is pleasing to the eye and offers everything we were looking for. The push-pull drawers are genuinely labour-saving! It is much admired by everyone who visits the house.”
